Eye Trauma and Ocular Emergencies
Edward H. Bedrossian, Jr., MD, FACS

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • List the symptoms associated with common acute ocular disorders.
  • Identify the extent and severity of eye trauma.
  • Explain the clinical steps involved in the ophthalmologist's evaluation and management of ocular emergencies and trauma.
  • Describe treatment plans utilized in the medical management of ocular/periocular trauma.

Advanced Refractive Surgical Techniques
James G. Nachbar, MD

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Distinguish between laser-created and blade-created flaps and explain how they differ.
  • Identify wave front aberrations in normal eyes and in post-LASIK eyes.
  • Outline the types of phakic implants and describe the results and complications associated with each.

A Perspective on the Relationship of the Eye and Systemic Disease
Joseph L. Bacotti, Jr., MD

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe: a) the basic anatomy and physiology of the visual system; and b) explain the pathophysiological correlation between systemic diseases and ocular disorders.
  • List the systemic diseases presented and describe their effect on the visual system.
  • Understand the importance of taking a detailed patient history and describe how this information is used by ophthalmologists in formulating a diagnosis.

Medical and Surgical Management of Glaucoma
Robert D. Fechtner, MD

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Identify and explain the different types of glaucoma.
  • Describe the various forms of medical and surgical treatment.
  • Explain the expected surgical outcome when incisional and laser treatment techniques are utilized.
  • Identify current drug therapies for management of the disease, including their safe use and side effects.

Evaluation and Surgical Management of Retinal Diseases
Paula C. Ko, MD

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the different types of retinal diseases and explain their causes.
  • Describe various surgical methods for treatment of retinal disease.
  • Outline the pre-op evaluation process and explain the post-operative prognosis for various procedures.

Cataract Surgery Techniques
Drew J. Stoken, MD

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the primary instruments used in surgery, and the various anesthetic techniques available for preparing a patient for surgery.
  • Describe the potential complications that could arise during surgery and during the post-op period.
  • Identify the latest surgical techniques for cataract removal and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Faculty

Joseph L. Bacotti, Jr., MD is Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at SUNY Stony Brook and a general ophthalmologist in solo private practice in Mineola, NY.

Edward H. Bedrossian, Jr., MD, FACS is Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Chief, Division of Ophthalmology at Delaware Co. Memorial Hospital, and an oculoplastics specialist in private practice in Drexel Hill, PA.

Robert D. Fechtner, MD is Associate Professor and Director, Glaucoma Division, Department of Ophthalmology, at New Jersey Medical School, University of Medicine and Dentistry, Newark, NJ.

Paula C. Ko, MD is Attending Surgeon at Christiana Hospital in Wilmington, DE. She is currently in private practice at Eye Physicians and Surgeons in Wilmington.

James G. Nachbar, MD is an Attending Physician at Virtua Memorial Hospital of Burling County and Rancocas Hospital. He is currently in private practice at South Jersey Eye Physicians.

Drew J. Stoken, MD is Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey. He maintains a private practice in Carlisle, PA.

General Information

Continuing Education Credit
An application has been filed with the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) for six continuing education credits (on a one-for-one basis).

Target Audience
This program is intended for ophthalmic staff with two or more years' experience working in an ophthalmology practice.

Registration Information
Because of limited seating all attendees are encouraged to pre-register by completing the form found on the reverse side of this brochure and returning with payment. The program sponsors discourage at-the-door registrants and do not guarantee that they will be accommodated. All registrants will be sent a confirmation letter and directions.

Registration fees include continental breakfast and lunch.

Overnight Accommodations
A block of rooms has been reserved at the Borgata ($250/night) for May 21 and 22, 2004. Check-in time is 4:00 pm, and check-out for all guests is 11:00 am. To make a reservation, call the Borgata at 866-MY-BORGATA and mention that you are part of the Metro East Regional Conference. You will need to reference code GBLA1E4. The cut-off date for making reservations is April 28, 2004.

Refund Policy
A full refund will be granted, less a $25/person administrative charge, with a request to the NYS Ophthalmological Society by May 14th. No refunds will be issued after that date.
